Substation Tier in Electric Utility Network

Hi Everyone,

We have a few questions regarding the Electrical UN (Utility Network) setup:

  1. Tier Placement for Step-Down Transformer and MV Circuit Breaker

In the Foundation data, we currently have the Step-Down Transformer → MV Circuit Breaker classified under the Distribution Tier. However, since having a feeder feed another feeder within the same tier causes issues, we're considering moving the Step-Down Transformer → MV Circuit Breaker to the Sub-transmission Tier instead.

That said, we're a bit unsure about naming it "Sub-transmission Tier."

  • Can we use the D_Rename table to rename the tier, and would this have any impact on the UN upgrade process?
  • Also, is there an existing tier called "Substation Tier" that we could use instead?

There shouldn't be any problem with having feeders in the same tier feed each other, hierarchical networks do it all the time (pressure zones, isolation zones, etc). If there is a specific problem you're having, please describe it.

Tiers can be renamed, but you'll need to make some major adjustments to the configuration. The intention is that you would use the existing tiers for modeling the corresponding subnetworks for each station (substation, switching station, etc). A typical substation may have a transmission side and a distribution side the intention is that the transmission side belongs to the transmission tier and the distribution side belongs to the distribution tier. If you create your own tier, you'll need to consider carefully how you do this.

The only "issue" I am aware of with a Feeder feed Feeder or adjacent subnetworks in the same tier is the inability to trace upstream through them without selecting a higher(lower number) tier as the target tier.  There is a backlog item for this and if this is what you are experiencing, please log a support incident and tied to the backlog item.  The more request, the higher it moves in the queue.
