Hello All,

We are using ArcMap Desktop 10.8 and ESRI 10.8 geodatabase (geometric network with traditional versioning) deployed on Oracle Database. We also have some custom adaptations and telecom specific data model on top of ESRI Geometric Network feature classes.

Now as we are planning to move to Utility Network, do we need to do the data migration to new utility network (data modeling mapping etc..) or is there any upgrade mechanism available from geometric network to utility network...

You will have to do a data migration as the utility network has a more fixed schema.  Also, attributes may be need to be stored differently depending on their use, like as network attributes.  I would suggest evaluating the Esri Communications Foundation and data model as a first step.  https://arcg.is/9Ljv8

To go along with the answer from John I would suggest starting with the two links below. Then look through the other links from Robert. I would also suggest you look for opportunities to unshackle yourselves from the custom adaptations you mentioned. I say this because the UN is growing at an exponential rate.  Customizations can hamper upgrades, sometimes other tools in the ESRI stack are not able to be used, and this can hold you back from truly getting the full value from your investment. If you have questions or need to talk please let me know.

The presentation from the second link (how to run a successful utility network prototype) can be found here: https://mediaspace.esri.com/media/t/1_2o2s2lev
