Staff from my office have created a great timeline tour of the history of Bismarck, located here for reference.
This timeline was created using a program called ChronoFlo, but we're currently paying a subscription fee for this service. This would make a great Story Map if there could be a way to visualize and navigate using the same functionality with a timeline feature. I've tried using the new timeline block within the sidecar in Story Maps, but it just doesn't provide a very nice flow or interaction the same way as the ChronoFlo app.
If ESRI could implement an enhancement to Story Maps to make this possible, I know that a lot of other storytellers would benefit!
In the meantime, if you are looking for a workaround using a free, open-source solution similar to ChronoFlo, then you might consider using TimelineJS in your StoryMap (see also StoryMaps and TimelineJS.)
@DarrelANucech - Thanks for sharing this idea. We may look at adding a horizontal timeline at some point in the future, but we don't have plans for this at the moment.
For now, you can easily embed any 3rd party timeline into your story, such as ChronoFlo, TimelineJS or any other one you might find. @PeterKnoop's resource below is very helpful if you're looking guidance about how to embed other timelines into a story.
