Regarding alternatives to Server Object Extensions in ArcGis

Hi,

Can anyone provide information regarding the alternatives  to the Server Object Extensions in ArcGis 10.1.
Like instead of Server Object Extensions can we directly communicate with the ArcGis Server using any of the Web Services?
If possible can anyone provide me the sample code(s) for the alternative(s) to the Server Object Extensions.
