Export Map Image gives the red x marker

I can not see the image via rest interface when i click Export Map Image - there is an X mark instead of the image....

Any ideas what it may me??????

Most likely virtual output directory was not configured correctly.

Also check if an output image is generated in the output folder when you call exportMapImage operation.

Yes the image gets generated in the output folder....
How should the virtual directory be configured properly?
