Traverse "sketch cannot be modified"

I am trying to create a traverse.

I click 'set start' and pick a point on my map. When I try to pick a second point, I get an error/warning "The sketch cannot be modified."

Somehow I drew one already on the wrong layer yesterday, but I can't get it to work for anything else.

EDIT:

I still don't know what the problem is, but I started using the edit Distance and Direction tool instead of a traverse.
