Hi,

Does anybody have any experience sharing annotation layers (feature-linked or otherwise) within a web map please? ArcGIS Pro guidance (24035: Layer type is not supported for web feature layer—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop) suggests that annotation layers are not supported as web feature layers, but I'm unsure whether they can be shared as a tile layer instead so they can be visualised with their geometric features? Or perhaps the functionality just isn't there yet?

Many thanks in advance.

Web feature layers only support feature layers. Below are examples of layer types that are not supported in web feature layers:

  • Annotation
  • Dimensions
  • Raster datasets
  • TINs

Check this blog Adding labels to ArcGIS Online web maps: Part 1

This blog entry has shown you how to migrate labels created in ArcMap into ArcGIS.com using the Feature Outline Masks tool (you could check with ArcGIS Pro instead of ArcMap) to create a polygon feature class which is then added to your web map as a shapefile.

This looks relatively straight-forward; thanks very much for your advice!

The suggested Feature Outline Masks tool requires an advanced licence for execution; work-around instructions for those with a lower licence level are provided here: How To: Convert an annotation feature class to a shapefile

I'm not sure on the viability of using points to display labels, particularly when handling a lot of road and place-name features, however this could be suitable until a time when Esri do offer the functionality directly through Pro.

Thank you.
