Removing Polyline Labels From Underneath a Polygon

I have two layers that I am dealing with: a polyline representing contours, and a polygon representing the outlines of buildings. The fill color of the polygons is set to the same color as the background (white). Some of the contour lines run underneath the polygons, and though they do not show through, as expected, the labels from the contours still show through, so that it looks as if there are random values floating in white space.

I have a Standard User License, so I am not able to use erase. I have also attempted to mess with the placement settings of the labels (weight etc..), but nothing has worked so far. Does anyone know a good way around this problem?

try setting the Feature Weight on the polygon to 1000.

From the doc

"The feature weights are ranked on a scale of 1-1000. A feature weight of 0 indicates that the feature should be treated as available space, while a weight of 1000 indicates that the feature is considered an obstacle and should not be overlapped by labels."
