Issues with Generalize & Align Modification tools

Hi there,

The generalize tool for smoothing polygons and alignment tool for fixing overlapping margins have been very useful and effective in the past. Recently, they have not been working as intended and I was hoping someone could shed some light on potential reasons for this.

After using the generalize tool, my polygons and polylines are smoothed as I'd like them to be, but now require alignment:

I use the align tool, hoping to eliminate the offset

but instead of aligning them, it reverts one of the features to its original shape:

The align tool seems to not only fail but also undo the actions of the previous modification. Any tips or suggestions for how to resolve this would be much appreciated.
