Exporting metadata for custom Python toolbox?

I edited and saved metadata for a custom Python toolbox and all individual tools as seen here:

I want to export the .xml metadata files to a separate metadata folder to make sure the info is in a backed up location. After exporting the .xml files, ArcGIS Pro does not seem to properly read the file. I opened the .xml file in Notepad and it looks like the metadata are stored there, but the metadata viewer in Pro just shows a blank metadata template. Anyone else run into this issue?
