Hi,

I am working to streamline mapping process using ArcGIS Pro (ver. 2.8) using map series. We have parcel records (different UTM Zones) to produce each map on it using our standard map template in UTM Zone. One of manual editing we are doing before produce PDF map(s) is manually insert coordinate table for each parcel and re-project to specific UTM Zone.

As Pro can manage multiple layouts (through mapseries), I want to ask how this can be done for each layout? for example I have now 50 layout, but need to insert manually coordinate table (.jpg file) and re-project map into specific UTM Zone where parcel falls.

Thanks

Zukh

Hi @MohdZukhairiAbdLatef!

Map series are made from the same single layout for different extents, not for different layouts.

https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/layouts/map-series.htm

In your case, you have different layouts, so the map series cannot handle your case.

I recommend using one of the automation tools, such as: ArcGIS Pro Tasks.

Thanks Hala for your reply. Can you share link or any further info on ArcGIS Pro Tasks? I am quite new with ArcGIS Pro.

Hi @MohdZukhairiAbdLatef,

@Hala_Abdelmaksoud is correct that Map Series works with a single layout. You state that you are using a standard map template in UTM Zone. Is this template a Layout file (.pagx)? If so, I believe you may still be able to use Map Series since the template is based on a single layout page.

Map Series can be used to update the spatial reference (UTM zone) of the map. You can use different spatial references for different pages in the map series based on a field in the index layer. For more information see Spatial Reference sub section under Optional Fields section in the help topic Create a spatial map series.

You can also use the geoprocessing tool Calculate UTM Zone in the Cartography toolbox to create the UTM zone field.

An important thing to keep in mind when using a Map Series to change spatial reference and other map properties (ex: rotation, map clipping) is that these updates made for the current Map Series page are also applied to the map and will be present when viewing the map in a Map View. If this an issue with your workflow you may want to consider Tasks as Hala suggests.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Thanks Tom for your reply.

Can you explain this further "Map Series can be used to update the spatial reference (UTM zone) of the map. You can use different spatial references for different pages in the map series based on a field in the index layer."

My scenario:

I have index map (polygon) crossing two different UTM Zone. This index map is used to assign work for Cartographers. When they received parcels (it could be more than 50 parcels/day), they need to prepare final map in specific UTM Zones.

MohdZukhairiAbdLatef,

When you create a map series you have the option to set map properties such as rotation and spatial reference. In order to do this you need to have fields in the index layer that are appropriate. This information is provided in the help topic I mentioned (and linked to) above.

Do you have a specific question?

Hi, since mapseries is a layout series, if you only have one layout with many zone or scale or ... it could be easy.

Make a polygon of each area, populate the field UTM, scale and rotation if there not the same.  For now, Pro have a new bug since, at least for annotations, the UTM data generated by the geoprocessing tool.  So, be careful and check if it's working.  If not, just make as many sub polygons that you have zone.

After that, the navigate to the pages of the referencing polygon will do the job.  You doesn't have to manually insert informations, it's all taking care by your polygon fields.
