I use the shape.area and shape.len fields extensively in ArcMap.

When a layer participates in a join, the shape.area and shape.len fields are no longer visible.

The work-around is have two copies of the feature class in the map.  One participating in the join, and the other not joined.

I agree.  Possibly of no help, but here's a link to the archived thread beginning in 2008:  http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=93&f=988&t=264702&mc=3#msgid814339

I have seen that thread before.  This has been a problem for me for a long time.  I had hope that 10 would address the issue.

This issue doesn't have very many points. Is this because there is some sort of work around? Please, I need to have one table that includes my segment lengths AND my joined information. I cannot simply add a new field to the dataset since I don't own it.
