Please consider adding the ability to measure along features similar to how we can trace features when we edit them. This is different than the current measure features as measure features will measure the entire feature, where "Trace Measurement" will measure a portion of a feature as needed by the user.
Example use:
Measuring complex features is often difficult if not impossible if the we are measuring only a part of a feature such as the distance of a stream between two bridges. The only workaround is to split the river and use the measure feature tool.
Thank You
Thanks for posting this idea, and I would like to add the area measuring by tracing straight lines and curves to get areas that are not polygon features. It will be great to have these features in the measure tool in Pro!
I could use this right now! In West Virginia, the Army Corp considers certain streams and rivers "navigable" to a certain mileage from the headwaters. I need to be able to trace along the NHD dataset to that given distance to be able to determine what is "navigable" and therefore property of the State. WV does not have a map of these waterways in their clearinghouse GIS data.
I was also hoping there was a way to trace along a feature so you could just measure part of it. I am trying to measure along a feature line that I made in the middle of a steam. But I need to measure how far along that line certain stream attributes start/stop. For example, I need to determine how far along that center line a riffle starts and stops, and an eroding bank starts and stops.
@JesseD80 I know this is quite a late reply, but I just learned that measuring a specific distance along a flowline can be done using the 'Limit trace length' option when tracing a feature (Edit -> Create Feature -> Trace -> Press 'o' on the keyboard to open the Trace options -> Limit trace length).
Once a limit length is set, the trace along a flowline (or any) feature will automatically stop after the specified distance has been reached (pressing 'F2' finishes the trace at its full length without having to worry about undoing part of it by moving the cursor to the Finish button). Unfortunately it does not display the current length while tracing, which would be useful.

I have exactly the same issue, trying to measure part of a river segment. This would be a great feature to have in the Measure tool
