When using the Clip tool (editing), most users will have the target feature selected. When the tool panel opens, it opens with the "Input Feature" tab and your selection becomes the Input Feature. It's more intuitive to make your selection the Target Feature and to have you select the Input Feature after opening the tool.
During the session at the UC, the presenter (Josephat?) even got it backwards.
