Documenting projects and exports

I find it would be useful to have a tool that creates a thumbnail of map exports I create with the date and project name and path so that when I get asked to recreate similar maps years later I have a record of where the original project is and what it is called. 

trying to do this currently in excel..Might use an access database

I know you can create thumbnails in the properties, but I dont know is an easy way to get the thumbnails out as an image.  Perhaps it can be done through phyton?

P.S.  One thing I use to archive important maps is map packages, which will save your mxd and data in a single package.
