Crop, rather than resize, map frame on layout

More often than not, when resizing a map frame interactively with the handles, I don't want the map to move, but it does in an attempt to stay centered (or at the same extent - depending on your settings). It would be nice if there were a keyboard shortcut or some way to treat the handles more like crop handles; keeping the map put, but revealing or hiding more of it when you drag the edges. Sort of like a graphics frame in InDesign, or a crop tool.

Hi Robert,

I think you get the result you're looking for by setting a  "Fixed extent" constraint on the map frame.

The map's extent and the aspect ratio of the map frame should remain constant as you resize the map frame.

Hope this helps,

Tom

No, I've tried that, not what I'm looking for. That helps if resizing from a corner and you're looking to keep the same proportions, but that's about it.

The workflow I want:

  1. Fixed scale map
  2. Activate the map frame
  3. Pan the map so it's in the correct position in the lower left corner
  4. Deactivate the map frame
  5. "Crop" the map frame from the upper right to fit my area of interest without the map contents moving

Current sort-of workaround is setting guides where I want the map frame boundaries and using Edit Vertices to snap the map frame handles to the guides, still have to pan the map back to where it's supposed to be though.
