Clip layers in a map — Polygon preview fill color

Regarding clip layers in a map (map properties, not a geoprocessing tool):

The polygon in the preview section of the window has donut holes; the two small rectangles are negative space within the larger rectangle. But you wouldn’t know that from the preview. I’m wondering if a fill could be used to indicate the shape of the polygon; the donut holes would be left as white.
