Why not implement this?:
Add a Map Service to ArcMap or Map Control
Use the Select Tool to select features
--> have acess to a selected set.
I understand the reason not to do this is to reduce chatter between the client and the server but why not allow the option?
We have Silverlight Apps that do this and they're not crashing the server....
