I would like to have to ability to reorder symbols within a style file. I often add new symbols to existing styles later on that I would like to have at the top instead of the bottom. Having the ability to reorder symbols would allow us to order symbols based on how often we use them.
I agree that being able to re-order symbols (preferably via drag and drop) would make my life much easier.
In the meantime, my poor workaround is to cut and paste symbols to get them in the order I want. Pasted symbols appear at the bottom of the list, so if you have 5 symbols called D, B, A, C, and E, in that order, but you want them to appear alphabetically, cut and paste A (so now you have D, B, C, E, A), then B (now you have D, C, E, A, B), then C (D, E, A, B, C), then D (E, A, B, C, D), and finally E, and then they're in the order you want. Drag and drop would be a lot faster and easier, though.
Currently once classes are added to a STYLX file, they cannot be ordered by dragging them in the Catalog, and they remain in their order of creation in the Symbology pane.
The only work to update currently is to copy, paste and delete the classes until the are in your new preferred order, which is a time consuming task, specifically if you simply want to add a new class that you would like to be grouped with some pre-existing classes.
Simple functionality to re-order the classes by dragging in the Catalog pane will allow for easy updating of custom STYLX files as teams refine, grow and enhance their cartography standards.
I just found this idea - I have asked for the same feature:
