Our organization, Teranet, is currently transitioning to the ArcGIS Pro Parcel Fabric and developing standardized workflows to support parcel fabric plan integration and ongoing parcel maintenance activities. As part of this transition, we plan to rely heavily on ArcGIS Pro Tasks to guide users through complex editing processes and promote consistency across our mapping workflows once we go live.

During onboarding, training, and early adoption, detailed step-by-step instructions within Tasks seem to be extremely valuable. We plan to use them to help our mappers learn new Parcel Fabric workflows, reduce errors, and ensure editing activities are completed consistently.

However, feedback from Teranet mappers participating in early rounds of testing has identified a usability challenge. As users become more familiar with the workflows (& consequently, task steps), the instructional text becomes less critical, yet it continues to occupy a significant portion of the Task pane real estate. In workflows that contain detailed guidance, this reduces the space available for embedded tools such as the Attributes pane, geoprocessing tools, or other task integrated interfaces.

As a result, our mappers have mentioned that they often have limited working space for the tools they use most frequently and may need to spend additional time scrolling through instructions they no longer require.

An example of this challenge is shown below, where detailed instructions consume much of the available Task pane space, limiting the area available for embedded tools.

Proposed Enhancement:

  • Add the ability to expand or collapse the instructions section within each Task step.

Benefits:

  • Maximizes screen real estate for embedded tools and panes
  • Improves efficiency for experienced users who no longer need detailed guidance
  • Maintains the value of comprehensive instructions for new users and training scenarios
  • Creates a more flexible and user-friendly Task experience without impacting existing task designs

As Teranet continues its implementation of ArcGIS Pro Parcel Fabric, Tasks are expected to become a key component of our parcel fabric plan integration workflows. Giving users the ability to collapse instructional content when it is no longer needed would improve productivity while maintaining the training benefits that detailed guidance provides.

Based on feedback from our mappers during testing, this enhancement would create a more efficient and streamlined editing experience for both new and experienced users and would help Teranet make better use of Task based workflows.
