Enable Traverse, Split, and Divide Tools to Create Points When Splitting Parcel Fabric Lines

In our organization, we manage an enterprise parcel fabric service within a branch versioned database.

We frequently create new parcels by COGOing lines using the Traverse tool, and we also edit existing lines using the Split and Divide tools. In parcel fabric, line ends require points to maintain topological integrity, but manually creating these points often slows down our workflow.

Currently, we have to:

  • Create the new lines

  • Run Build Extent (or Build Active) to generate points at the line ends

However, this process has drawbacks. We often shrink parcels to seeds while we focus on improving the linework. At this stage, we’re not ready to reconstruct the parcels. Unfortunately, Build Extent/Active also reconstructs these seeds. To avoid this, we have to either:

  • Move the seeds outside the map frame so they aren’t included during the build, or

  • Rebuild them and then manually shrink them again

Both approaches disrupt our workflow and reduce productivity.

We would benefit greatly from an enhancement to the Traverse, Split, and Divide tools (when used within the parcel fabric environment) with an option to automatically generate points at line ends.

Specifically, a checkbox at the bottom of these tools: “Generate point at line ends”

We’re aware this functionality can be replicated using an attribute rule (see: Esri Support Article), but this adds processing overhead to the database. A built-in tool option would be far more efficient and streamlined for our needs.

The divide tool does create points.

The Split tool does not create points for 'inner points" - should it?

As for the traverse creating points - isn't this the same as this idea for the ability to use group template  in traverse?

Hi @AmirBar-Maor ,

For your example, I would use Split into COGO lines.

We frequently use the Divide and Split tools to edit straight lines.

  • We use Divide when working with a single line (unfortunately, it only works on one line at a time—wish it supported multiple lines).

  • We use Split when editing multiple lines.

However, neither tool creates points at the split locations. Please see screenshots below.

Thank you for the group template suggestion—that’s a game changer for us, and we’re going to implement it right away!

That said, while it's a great temporary workaround, I’d still like to see an option in the Traverse, Split, and Divide tools to automatically generate points at line ends. The group template doesn’t have built-in intelligence, so if a point already exists at the line end, it still tries to create a new one—leading to a “point must be disjoint” topology error.

@MizukiKayano2

Please change the title of the idea to indicate that those tools should create points when splitting parcel fabric lines. My answer related to using those tools on parcel polygons.

As for using the group template in the traverse tool - this is still an open idea and has not been implemented yet.  So, there's no need to rush and implement group templates for the Traverse tool.

Hi, it is not letting me Kudos this.  Is it because it's status is Needs Clarification.   If so, can we get that changed now since clarification was provided?       If more clarification is needed, what exactly do you need clarified?     I'd like to Kudos this idea.  Thanks

AmirBar-Maor

@CathyAppleton

I don't know why kudos is disabled (also for me). The status of the idea should not disable it.

@JesseCloutier - FYI

JesseCloutier

Hi @AmirBar-Maor and @CathyAppleton, it's an intentional setting that kudos on Ideas are disabled when their status is set to Needs Clarification (See Ideas Status Changes section at bottom of Frequently Asked Questions about ArcGIS Ideas). The intent is that it prevents voting on ideas that are incomplete or unclear—when it may not be fully evident what the votes are supporting.

Amir, if sufficient clarification is provided please feel encouraged to change the status of the Idea back to Open. This will reactivate the kudos function.
