I have configured popups for a hosted feature layer with geotagged photos in my web map with the new map viewer (1st image).
In WAB, using the same web map, the pop ups revert to an older style with basic hyperlinks to the images rather than the previews (image 2). Is there a way to configure the pop ups in WAB to have more control over how they display?

You'll have to use Map Viewer Classic. The screenshot you attached appears to be in the new Map Viewer. https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/reference/configure-pop-ups.htm there are instructions in here for showing images within the popup.
I think this is because WAB does not use the latest version of Javascript api like the new mapviewer does. There are several features in the new mapviewer that are not compatible with WAB. Consider building your app in Experience Builder to take full advantage of the latest popup features.
Thanks @AustinCanty1 . It is because of the different api versions between Map Viewer & WAB. However, we put a significant amount of work into configuring the current WAB last year & it's being used. I had found a solution to making the image attachments visible in the WAB pop-ups, I think by adding an expression. But I can't find that solution now & need to use it again. Any help?
