What is the workflow for exporting data in a SDE using ArcMap 10.2 to ArcGIS Online for data collection using Collector?

Currently using mapping grade devices with ArcPad Studio and would like to transition to mobile data collection.   We have Trimble mobile boosters to increase collection accuracy to mapping grade.  Would love any input as the proper instructions to upload data from our SDE database -> ArcGIS Online ->Collector-> properly sync to Online/back into our SDE database.  Thx

Hello,

Does your organization use ArcGIS Server? That would be the way to go if you are editing data stored in an SDE workspace. If so, you'd want to register your SDE workspace using ArcGIS Server Manager and publish the layers as an editable feature service. If you will need to enable offline editing, you'll want to enable Sync on the feature service.

Once you get the URL to your editable feature service, add the service to a web map in ArcGIS Online. Save the web map and ensure that the service and the web map are shared to a group which is accessible to your field data collectors.

If you need finer-grained control of who can edit the data (such as specific active directory credentials), there are ways to do that although I don't have direct experience with setting that up. Users will need to enter their active directory credentials to edit the data.

When the field data collectors log in to Collector, they should see the web map appear in their list of available web maps. They can then open the map and begin editing, or (if Sync and offline use are enabled) download the data and basemap for their editing area to their device to initiate the offline editing workflow.

Hope this helps!

Micah
