Web Style : Do webmaps create any dependencies on the web style?

I have a question that on a previous similar topic @RussRoberts was able to kindly provide help with.

---

When creating and sharing a public facing Web Style's (2D) are there any dependencies created by the maps/weblayers etc that ultimately use them?

Scenario:

- A Webstyle is created and shared publicly

- An external party finds and uses some symbols in this Webstyle for their own layer/item and webmap product

- The Original Webstyle item is removed and then perhaps superseded

Would the external party's product be affected? I'm wanting to understand if Web Styles have an underlying connection with the products that use them or if they are much like stylx files in ArcGIS pro where the style is 'given' to the map layer but has no relationship afterwards.

I hope this question makes sense!

Thank you

Hey @MelissaBrooks

If you shared the web style publicly and someone added it to their org symbol galleries and or added it in Map Viewer through an adhoc workflow where they used some symbols and then you removed the web style (unshared it or deleted it) the symbols will remain in the map as we do not have any dependencies on the web style symbols  once they are applied to a feature styling in a web map or layer item. You can publish a new web style from Pro with the same naming to the same account where the original exists and overwrite the web style and users who have that web style in their symbol gallery will see the updates without requiring any action to update. The symbols used in maps/layer items will remain unchanged if those symbols were removed/updated in the overwritten web style and that's when users of the web style would need to go to the symbol gallery and pick the updated symbol to apply it to that feature.

Hope this helps

Russ
