Configure Editing template won't save

When I go into the Templates option under Configure editing it will not allow me to save the template. The layer in question is being pulled from our server (not hosted online). When I go to save any changes made on the template, I get prompted to login to our portal, which I do, but then I get this error.

I have everything set to allow for editing and I'm an administrator for my organization so I'm not sure what other privileges are needed to get this to save.

If anyone has a clue as to why this isn't working, I'd be eternally grateful. I've been trying everything to get this to work and I'm all out of ideas.

Hi @MelissaGearman

That does seem off. As an admin, you should be able to save any changes to the templates for hosted feature layers. If you're having trouble with hosted feature layers, I have a couple of suggestions:

  • Option 1. Check the form and template to ensure that there aren't any errors (default values, field lengths, use of reserved key words).
  • Option 2. Make changes to the template in another app like Field Maps Designer and see what happens there.
  • However, keep in mind that ArcGIS Online does not support managing templates for non hosted layers. You can manage those in ArcGIS Pro.

Best, Emily

@MelissaGearman I am having the exact same issue! I can edit the template to my hearts content in Map Viewer but I get the same error when I try and save. The only difference is we are using Enterprise / Portal 11.5.

@EmilyGeo Going along with your suggestions:
Option 1 - I don't have any thing out of the ordinary and still can't configure the template.
Option 2 - We are at Enterprise / Portal 11.5 and Map Viewer Classic doesn't work properly. Using Field Maps Designer, I'm not able to edit the template at all.

Hi @JamesRains

Thanks for checking how this works in other apps.

Managing templates for hosted feature layers should be supported in both Field maps and Map Viewer.

1. Do you see any messaging in Field Maps Designer as to why you can't edit the template?

2. Would you be able to submit a ticket to tech support so we can troubleshoot the issue? That's the best way for us to determine if there is a bug.

Thanks! Emily

@EmilyGeo
1. Within Field Maps Designer there isn't any messaging at all. In fact, there isn't anything I can edit at all regarding the Templates. Everything is either grayed out or there just no options to do anything. I have tried this in both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

2. I will definitely start a support ticket on this.

Also, since this is on the AGOL Questions, I went ahead and started a thread on Enterprise Portal Questions as well, prior to seeing your reply . Unable to save your template changes

@EmilyGeo  Sorry for the delayed response on this.

Like @JamesRains, none of the suggestions seem to be working. We're working on an older version of Enterprise (10.9). We will be updating later this year but from what James says, it's not working on the newer version as well. Within Field Maps Designer the templates tab gives me a message that templates are read only.

Hi @MelissaGearman @JamesRains

I see, thank you for re-iterating that you are working in Enterprise.

I apologize for the confusion between Online and Enterprise, but it turns out this is expected behavior when working with non hosted layers in Online.

  • ArcGIS Online supports configuring templates for hosted feature layers only.
  •  For non-hosted layers, the best practice is to use ArcGIS Pro to make any changes.

I hope that helps!

Best, Emily

@MelissaGearman  In case you're still experiencing this problem, I found a workaround for my situation, though I'm working with Portal and not ArcGIS Online. I went back into ArcGIS Pro to the Create Features Pane and edited the template for each symbolized feature. This allowed me to set default values just like I was editing in Pro. I then republished/overwrote the service in my portal and now all my default values show up in the the web/mobile applications. Hope this helps until ESRI can get this fixed in both ArcGIS Online & Portal.

@EmilyGeo

I get the same error whenever I try to configure templates in Field Maps and in the new Map Viewer. It fails with both hosted and federated services on our portal (currently 11.5).  This is not a new problem, but I don't remember when I first encountered it.  Maybe a couple of years ago with Field Maps.  I am so sick of workarounds and republishing layers.
