Update subtype values in a hosted feature layer?

I have been asked to add a couple of new values to a field in a hosted feature layer that is a subtype. The new values would be numbers with a corresponding text identifier. I have checked and it appears this is not allowed without a republish, which won't work.

If I'm wrong about that and there's a way to do it, I'd very much appreciate hearing about it.

Your data was created in Pro and copied to AGOL? You can change schema in ArcPro and then overwrite the layer to AGOL. As long as your IDs match it shouldn't disrupt much. I do this constantly.
