Unable to load a feature service layer error in Collector

I am getting the following error when I open a manhole inspection Collector map that contains a feature service.

Layer Not Loaded
Unable to load layer "Data Layer Name" from "server name"
A server with the specified host name could not be found


This is a feature service that was published from desktop to server(both 10.2) and added to our organization's online account.  Can this service be exposed from my server through the online account or does it have to be a hosted service on our online account(which requires credits)?

Is the server a secure server?  If that's the case, your mobile device would need to have the proper credentials to view the service.
