Was asked to check if there is subscription ArcGIS Online imagery data that represents either:
a) An improved data product (resolution, coverage, currency) over the free product.
b) A specified source, so that the entire area of coverage could be described as being from vendor X.

Of course, one could contact vendors directly, but I am wondering if a subscribable clearinghouse is available or in the cards. I don't see anything like that, and searching for imagery sources gives me a list that I can just put on a map directly.

A World Imagery service is hosted online for use in ArcGIS clients.  This service requires no subscription.  At this time, we don't have any subscription services with more resolution, although we do plan a big expansion of the World Imagery service with new imagery.  There is some basic metadata for the service, and you can see this metadata in the following app:  http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisonline/content/index.html#/Content_Viewer/011q0000001z000000/.  You can click on the map in a given location, and you'll see the vintage and vendor.

Harry,

There are several premium imagery subscriptions through the ArcGIS Marketplace and they're fully integrated into ArcGIS Online. The vendors currently participating are DigitalGlobe, Airbus and Blackbridge. The best place to read about them is by searching for Imagery in the Marketplace
