From watching some videos and reading articles, the subscription option seems it was in beta in fall 2011???is that still the case? If the final version is in full swing now, has any features been tweaked or added when converting out of beta? Also how does the pricing pan out?

it is still in beta. pricing will be released in the coming weeks. you'll be able to do a, i believe, 30-day evaluation after ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 is released (by end of June).

Thank you! also another question for anyone out there...is there some sort of platform or view option to see/share the raw data that is used in a map and the extensive meta data? I am trying to share a map along with the actual dataset which belongs to it.

You could create then publish a map or layer package from ArcGIS Desktop. This will allow someone else with desktop to download the package and view its contents, data and all.
