Does anyone have any advice for adding or creating temporal data to ArcGIS online? I was able to get the time slider feature to work on my Desktop, but when I exported it to a shapefile, zipped it up, and imported into Online, it wouldn't work (the Description selection is always grayed out).  And yes, I do have a proper Date field included (at least I think I do). Any help is appreciated.

Only time enabled map services and image service will display with the time slider. Shapefiles with a date field are not supported.

Thanks,

Thanks Mike. So unless our department has ArcGIS Server 10, there is no way for us to upload - at no cost - our own time-enabled layers to ArcGIS online? And would an install of Server 10 need to be accessible to the outside world (as opposed to internal network access only) in order to work?

Yes, at this point, ArcGIS Online only supports time aware data hosted by ArcGIS Server. Yes, the REST endpoint of your ArcGIS Server instance would also need to be accessible outside your organization, but the service itself can be secured with a username and password.

hope this helps,

Mike
