Everything is working as described except that the labels are unreadable when displayed on the arcgis online map. They're sized correctly and in the proper location but the label is a series of strange symbols and not letters. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks.
Answered my own question. When adding the shapefile to arcgis online, it is necessary to check the "Keep Original Features" box in the import dialog window.
