Is there a way to convert an lpk file for use online?

Hello,

Is there a way to take the World Latitude and Longitude Grids provided by ESRI (LINK) and save it in a form that is recognized by ArcGIS Online Map Viewer?  I have ArcGIS Desktop installed, but have no training.  I would like to use the Online Map Viewer to have students practice using latitude and longitude.  I found a service already provided, Prominent World Longitudes and Latitudes (LINK), which has the lines and labels, but degrees are only down to 5 degrees, whereas the other has 1 degree intervals and are labeled.  My students will have Chromebooks to use, so, although our state has an ArcGIS K-12 State License, my students will only be able to access via the online web access.

The link you referenced takes you to page where you can download the layer package or open it in ArcMap. If you open it in ArcMap, you can export the .sdc file into a shapefile or geodatabase feature class which can then be published as a hosted service.

However, as the extent of the data covers the entire world, publishing a tiled map service may not be feasible as it would require potentially millions of tiles. Furthermore, publishing a hosted feature service is not feasible either as there are over 130,000 records in the dataset and it would not perform well dynamically.

You may be better off using the lat long grid from the second link your referenced, this is a simple map service hosted on http://edumaps.esricanada.com that performs fairly well.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

For a few days now, this web service has not been available. Will the rest web service be coming back? We use the tetonic layers and fault layers for our Emergency Management Flex Viewer.

Thanks,

How do I go about exporting it as a shapefile?  I tried doing that (via ArcTools feature to shapefile), but the result was 4 files of a shapefile that were 1k each.  When I uploaded it to the map viewer, it didn't put anything on the map itself.

The ESRICanada 5 degree grid just isn't detailed enough when students zoom in on a map.  For example, if looking for the lat / long of Dresden, Germany, the lines are too far apart for the students to actually compare them if they are zoomed in far enough to see eastern Germany.

I am not GIS trained to understand services, etc....  From playing with ArcGIS Online, I can explain to students how to add a layer to a basemap.  If I can get that lpk file as a shapefile for them to upload (zipped), then they can apply it to a basemap and be off and running.  (If nothing else, I could map the map online and simply share the link to the map for students to use.)

If you have it open in ArcMap, you can right click on the layer in the table of contents > Data  > Export data.

However, adding it as a zipped shapefile to the ArcGIS.com map viewer will not give you good results, it is a large amount of data (130,000 records) and will not perform well in your web browser.
