IE 9 Sign-In Errors for Secured Services

I downloaded the 'Basic Viewer' application template and am hosting this app over my company's server.  This app directs users to a password-protected, secure map with secure services. The sign-in process works with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, but when I try to access the app with Internet Explorer 9, I get the following error message: "Unable to Create Map: Aborted the sign-in process to avoid sending password over insecure connection"

As I understand, the solution provided by Esri tech support is to install a proxy on our server to run with IE 9 compatibility. Our IT folks are not thrilled with this solution, and do not want to install Chrome or Firefox on all users' machines. I was wondering if anyone has a better solution? This problem seems simple enough, given the fact that IE 9 is one of the more popular web browsers out there.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

It is possible to store the username and password to the service with the item in ArcGIS.com. Doing this effectively uses ArcGIS Online security to control access rather than the security of the service itself. When you add the service item to My Content, there are options in the add item dialog that allow you to embed the username. See attached.

I'm not sure this will solve your problem. Generally, when people download and host a web app, if it doesn't work, more often than not, they need to configure the proxy.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike -

Thanks for getting back to me.

I don't seem to have the same features you have when adding a shapefile to 'My Content'. Any ideas on this issue? Please see the attached image for details on what I see when I add a shapefile and try to create a service.

Adding a username and password only appears when you add a reference to a secured service running on ArcGIS Server. Publishing a shapefile to your ArcGIS Online organization creates a hosted service where the security is defined by who you grant access to it via groups. Users have to sign in to access the service using their ArcGIS Online account.
