I am a new user in my organization. I created a couple maps last week based on a general map that our administrator uses. After a couple days of working on them, I found that when I tried to open it I got "The map cannot be drawn because the owner has not provided a Bing Key for the Bing Map it includes". I don't need any particular background map and am a little concerned that the layers I have drawn are gone. The same base map that I used still works fine for our admin, so we can't figure out what happened to mine. If I can take the Bing Map out of the equation, that's fine or if I can figure out how to transfer our organizations Bing Key to my maps, that would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Shane

Shane,

This issue is related to complimentary use of Bing maps being phased out in the latest release of ArcGIS Online. Existing maps with a Bing basemap should continue to open, however, if they are re-saved, the error you mentioned will be received.

You indicated that this is an organization and not a public account so one thing you can do is obtain a Bing map key from Microsoft (URL below) and add it in the organization settings under the map tab (clear the browser cache if you don't see it). This will allow you to open the map, switch to an ArcGIS Online basemap and re-save. Also, some people have had success with opening the map in ArcGIS Explorer Online, switching the basemap and re-saving. However, this did not work with the customer I was helping, it just hung forever when trying to open it.

If you want to continue using Bing maps after obtaining your key, be sure to familiarize yourself with Bing maps terms of use.

What kind of layers did you have in your map? Hosted services? Map notes? If you have hosted services, I would advise you to just rebuild the map without the need to obtain a key for Bing maps. If you have map notes, that's a different story as they're mark-ups that are native to that particular map and you'll need a Bing key to access that data.

If you have a public account and your map contains map notes, this is an issue we're trying to fix right now as their is no way to input a Bing map key into a public account, however, there are some work arounds. One is to try opening it in ArcGIS Explorer Online as I mentioned above, if that doesn;t work, try opening the map in ArcMap and exporting the map notes to shapefiles which can be added as items to your content.

This is an organizational account, so I am going to try what you suggested for the key. The work I did on the map was through Map Notes. I'm still doing very basic stuff as I have not attended the ArcGIS I: Getting Started course, yet.

Thanks for your advice!

Some people have also had success with opening the web map in ArcGIS Explorer online, switching the basemap and re-saving. However, I was not able to do this with the customer I was working with, it just hung forever when trying to open it.

Daniel,

Your steps while helpful did not solve my problem.  Now I cannot get into the map to edit or update it at all.  I am hoping ESRI's solution is not to recreate the entire webmap and everything that is tied into it....
