When I point the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer at a MapService on our internal network, I get the following message:
Layer 'MyService - MyLayer'
seems to be on an internal network and is not accessible to ArcGIS.com. Thus, editing will be disabled on this layer.

Is there a technical reason why editing is disabled? Is there any way to enable editing of internal layers?

Firefox asks for my login but still show disabled editing error message after logging in.  Any updates from people on this?

Hi Brandon,

Are you using an ArcGIS Server Service? If so, what kind of security is enabled on your service?

Editting an ArcGIS Server based Feature Services with Web Tier Authentication is not supported functionality in ArcGIS Online.Token based Security will allow editing through ArcGIS Online.

ArcGIS Server web services—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS

If the service is a hosted feature service, please ensure that editing is turned on on the layer or in the web map.

Thanks,

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Thank you for the information.  We do use web tier authentication but it seems like our reasons for why have changed.  I plan to switch to token and see if the issue is resolved.

Best,

Brandon

Hi Kelly,

I made the switch and now when I look at the service details it asks me to login.  And unfortunately none of my logins seem to work.  My guess is there are some other settings I need to change to support token based security.  Do you know of set-up documentation I could look at prior to submitting an esri ticket?  Is it in the link you provided before?

Thanks,

Brandon

Hi Brandon,

Try this tutorial for assistance with creating secured services with built-in token security.

If you wish to store the credentials with the item, follow this documentation when adding the service.

Let me know if this helps,

Thanks,

Kelly
