Editable layers in Web maps

Hi,

I've just started using Web maps on arcgis.com and created a test map. I then created an editable layer and shared the map publicly. My issue is that other users are able to make edits to the map and layer when they view the map. Is this right?

The documentation says editable layers can only be changed by me, as the map author. Is there a setting I can change so people viewing the map cannot change the editable layer?

Cheers
Dave

Anyone who views a public web map can make changes to it. They can add layers, add new features and so on. However, they will not be able to save the web map and overwrite the original version. They can, however, do a "Save as" and save it as their own map.

Presently, there is nothing you can do within the ArcGIS.com map viewer to change the editable nature of the map. We have considered allowing an author to make a map read only, but this is not currently scheduled on our release plan. You might consider embedding the map in another web page, like this:

http://mikesarcgismaps.blogspot.com/

Or, you can use an application template and deploy the application on your web server (if you have one).

Both the embed and create template options are available under the Share menu on the Map Viewer.

Thanks,

Mike

The link seems to be working for me... Maybe there was a temporary problem with blogger?

My problem is the opposite. I want to share a map with a small group and I want everyone in the group to be able to make changes to the editable layer. Is this possible?

Thanks,

Tim,

You have to host a feature service on your GIS server in order for everyone to be able to edit the features. Map Notes do not support this type of editing.

this type of collaborative map editing is out there ... it really is needed for community-based projects

Mike,

I am able to edit from a zipped shapefile or csv but cannot figure out how edit a 'feature service layer'.
I have created lots of services and added items to My Content like this:
http://acgisprod:****/arcgis/rest/services/***Layers/MapServer/ (all layers in the service)

http://acgisprod:****/arcgis/rest/services/***Layers/MapServer/2 (a layer in the service)

When I add these items to a map in arcgis online and open it in ArcGIS.com Map Viewer I cannot edit them.

Are the above examples of 'feature service layer'?
I am using 9.3 - does this only work in 10?
When I have made edits to the csv or shapefile layer how can I export these to save as data?

Am I missing something quite basic?

Thanks,

Beth,

Those are map services (note the MapServer part of the URL). Editing is not supported on map services. You need to explicitly publish a feature service. I don't believe 9.3 has the ability to publish feature services, however. You'll need to upgrade your server.

Thanks,

Mike
