When making a map in ArcGIS Online, I'd sometimes like to use one of the ESRI basemaps without its labels reference layer (e.g., Terrain, but without the labels).  Is that possible?

Add the service directly from the REST endpoint using Add > Add from the web and check the option to use as a basemap:

Terrain basemap:
http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Terrain_Base/MapServer

Most of the basemaps in the Basemap drop down have the actual basemap, as well as a reference layer, (the labels), on top of it.  Use this site to find the actual basemaps to add to a webmap as a basemap.

I have tried this, but I am still getting street labels to show up.  I am trying to use Esri's Light Grey Base basemap, but no matter how I bring it into Pro without the reference layers, I still get street labels to show up.  Is there any solution to getting just the basemap to show up without any labeling what so ever and just that grey background?  I love this Light Grey Base as a basemap, but for the project I'm working on I need to remove all labels, and the solution provided by Jonathan Quinn does not work.Labels still show up...

Use the Vector Tile Style Editor to turn off the labels...  save your own version of the style.

https://developers.arcgis.com/vector-tile-style-editor/(modal:new)

The Style is saved as a Tile Layer in your content.

Use the Tile layer as a basemap for your map.

Hi Mark.  I'm trying to follow your instructions to turn off labels on a basemap, but I'm not seeing where in the Vector Tile Style Editor it lets you turn off the labels.  Just to be sure I'm in the right place, here is a screenshot of the menu options I see.

Amelia,

You have to actually uncheck each label layer, if you click the layer button below quick edit, you will see all of them.

In another post https://community.esri.com/thread/232387-is-there-an-easy-way-to-turn-of-all-labels-in-the-vector-st...    I suggest another way to remove the labels, that may be of interest to you.

Hmmm. I'm seeing a lot of layers, but they're all symbology, no labels.

Also no way to turn them on or off that I can see. Here's a screenshot.

But I'll take a loot at your other link as well, thank you.

OK, sorry, I just didn't look carefully enough. Takes some wading

through!

Thanks!
