Hi,

Has anyone noticed since the migration of content from arcgisonline.com to arcgis.com a change in how ArcMap 10 PreRelease adds data from ArcGIS Online.

In ArcMap when selecting File menu > ArcGIS Online, a blank ArcGIS Online window now appears.  Before the migration this was populated with some of the data that was available on ArcGIS Online.  I know the search window will return results of data sources on ArcGIS Online but it seemed better to have some content presented to you before the search.

Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi,

Turns out there is a posting on an ArcGIS Desktop thread:

http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/4978-10-Pre-Release-Empty-Basemaps-Gallery-(File-gt-Add-Data-gt-Add...)

This has a full explanation to what is happening.

Sorry about this issue and glad you found that previous post.

Quick summary:

ArcMap 10 Pre-Release Basemap Gallery empty? No way to fix it but simply click this link:

http://links.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/en/arcmap/layers

which runs a query that returns the same set of basemaps from the new ArcGIS.com site that were supposed to be in the Basemap Gallery. No login needed and it automatically flips ArcGIS.com to be in 'Show All Content' mode so you see layer packages, etc. Now just click Open next to the basemap you want to add into your map. (These are layer packages so they work in 9.3.1 too, but here are similar queries that return the recommended set of basemaps for ArcMap 9.3.1, 9.3, and 9.2 users).

ArcMap 10 Pre-Release File > ArcGIS Online or File > Add Data > Add Data From ArcGIS Online window has no featured content? No way to fix it but click this link, which gives you the list of featured layer packages you should be seeing:

http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?q=tags:ArcMap_Featured&t=group&owner=esri&title=ESRI%20Maps%20...

The featured layer packages are just a subset of the ones published by ESRI that we think may be especially useful. None of these are in the basemaps lists referenced above. But simply search using the File > ArcGIS Online dialog in 10 pre-release or the new ArcGIS.com site to find other data from ESRI and the GIS community. All of the queries above simply fish items out of the official ESRI Maps and Data group in ArcGIS.com based on their tags. If you can't see what you want you can then either search the ESRI Maps and Data group, or choose to search everything on the site.

Is this all fixed in the upcoming ArcGIS 10 Final Release? Definitely is!
