Based on my study site: the default Web Mercator projection is not suitable. I would like to alter the projection of the basemaps to a tweaked version of Canada Lambert Conformal Conic. Is this possible? If so, how would I go about doing it?

Thanks

Jenn,

There is no way to change the spatial reference of the basemaps, however, you can make them reproject on the fly depending on the client you're using. For instance if you're using ArcMap, you define the coordinate system of the data frame and then when you add the basemap it will apply a geographic transformation on the fly. You'll receive a warning that the following data source uses a GCS that is different from the one used by the data frame.

Hope this helps,

I am looking to change the basemap projection in ArcGIS Online.
When I download/open the ESRI basemap in ArcMap and try to save it in the new projection, I am met with errors. Am I able to alter the projection of ESRI basemaps in ArcGIS Online? Or is there any other way to alter the projection of ESRI basemaps for use within ArcGIS Online?

Thanks

As Daniel mentioned earlier you cannot change the basemap projection in ArcGIS Online. If you want to upload your own data, you have to project it first or use ArcGIS for Desktop instead with ArcGIS for Server.
