Adding Fields to a Hosted Feature Layer After Performing a Join: Is It Still Doable?

Hello everyone,

I have executed a join between two hosted feature layers in ArcGIS Online. However, due to this action, I've encountered an issue: I'm no longer able to add any fields to either of the two hosted feature layers involved in the join.

I'm wondering if there's a specific setting I need to adjust to regain the ability to add fields to my source hosted feature layers, or is this simply not an option anymore. Geez I really hope it’s still an option 😉

Hi @JonJones1,

When you create a view through a join, the schema is locked on the source feature layers. This is why you're not seeing the option to add a field. Relaxing the scope of this is on our roadmap. We appreciate the question because it gives this feature another bump on the product development board.

Thank you so much for your response! I do have a follow-up question directly related to this, as being unable to update my joined view layers is causing me to constantly make new ones. Would you mind taking a look at this post where I desperately ask for help on how to perform the request mentioned? I spend a few hours each week having to make new joined view layers.

This isn't a complete solution, but something that saves some time with this issue for me:

when you recreate the join view after deleting it (needs to be a permanent delete, not recycle bin) then adding new fields to the feature layer, if you give your new new view exactly the same name as the one you deleted, the map references that view, there's no need to update anything in the map/s.
