Currently when inviting a user to a ArcGIS Online Group, the notification only appears on the website.
Especially in the case of an invitation to/from an external account it would be very useful to send an email.
Example. Recently I was hearing that people weren't "receiving my invitations" but they simply didn't know to check they tiny Notifications menu on the ArcGIS Online page.
