Please add an enhancement to allow users to link a vector marker to an attribute in the table so the marker can display the attribute’s value. Currently only color changes are supported, but the ability for custom text markers to dynamically show attribute values would be a huge improvement to symbology in ArcGIS Online and Enterprise.
It would be also nice to have the ability to rotate the vector marker using rotation value in the attributes. This can be done for the entire symbol but not for elements inside symbol.
This is currently not exposed in the Map Viewer authoring experience but you can create symbols like this in Pro and publish the feature layer item or web map and Map Viewer and other 4.x JavaScript based apps will honor that symbol configuration. When you do these types of attribute connections to symbols the legend currently does not reflect this in both Pro and MV/4.x based apps.
We did create symbols in Arc Pro but when we publish to arcgis online, expressions do not transfer over and data is not getting labeled. I am not sure if we are missing a step. It is not just an attribute connection. There is a rather complex expression involved inside vector marker text object driven by multiple fields/if statements. It hurts that Web map display does not match how things are displayed in arc Pro. I have updated the title to include something about expression being involved. Thank you for the reply Russ!
If you can share the Pro project I can take a look to see what could be the issue.
