It would be nice to be able to create, save and re-apply or import custom symbology. For example, the feature available in ArcGIS Pro for importing symbology (.lyr files). This is very useful when creating land-use or zoning maps with standardized legends that needs to be reused in multiple maps that will not only save time but promotes standardize look and feel of those maps.

Creating, storing and sharing a symbology that be reused and applied has many advantages.

  • Standardization - same look and feel - required for authorized uses like land-use colors
  • Saves time for re-configuring symbology
  • Promotion for data visualization best practices

Completely agree. Especially when working with time-series data across multiple layers (e.g. crime data across different time period layers). It is crucial to have identical symbology across the layers to facilitate visual comparison over time.

I use the ArcGIS API for Python to save out JSON files for Symbology (Popups, Forms etc). I can then reapply these to any layer I want across multiple WebMaps. When symbology updates in one WebMap, I export the JSON and apply across all WebMaps where required.

I fully support this idea to make the process of creating and applying templates for WebMap layer or Feature Layer components accessible via the GUI in AGOL.
