Is the NIS supported on LINUX, the schemas say that it is only supported on Windows?

Short answer is Yes the NIS GDB can be on Linux. For more information see below.

The NIS is ideally an enterprise geodatabase. For high level info about geodatabases see (http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0408/entergdb_101.html).

In essence it is supported upon every platform ESRI currently lists.(http://www.esri.com/technology-topics/standards/open-platform.html) In practice however, the Nautical Solution has tested only a smaller subset of the platforms. Linux and windows being among them for the NIS.
