Map overlay image does not show

I am using the google API with an arcgis server map overlay. The google base map loads perfectly and I see a red cross on the map indicating that the arcgis server map image does not load.
When using Fiddler for debugging my browser (IE7) I get a message "You are not authorized to view this page". The correct image is present in the argisoutput directory, yet my browser does not allow me to load the image. I have checked the permissions on the arcgisoutput directory on IIS and everything seems to be perfect.

As has happened often before, the answer to my problem came through persistence. I came across the ESRI Knowledge Base article at [URL="http://resources.arcgis.com/content/kbase?fa=articleShow&d=33528"] which deals with exactly my problem. However I followed the procedures prescribed and still did not manage to solve the problem. As a last resort I deleted the arcgisoutput virtual directory in IIS and re-generated it with the same settings as previously and Voila! The image now displays as it should.
