The Instant App language switcher was updated to includes the Translation assitant (beta) in the June 2024 Update of ArcGIS Online. It is available in 17 Instant Apps templates: 3D Viewer, Atlas, Attachment Viewer, Basic, Nearby, Zone Lookup, Media Map, Interactive LegendSlider, Sidebar, and Portfolio.

What is the Translation assistant (beta)?

The translation assistant is a new feature in ArcGIS Instant Apps that is designed to help you translate your app-authored text in Instant Apps.  The translation assistant uses machine translation to generate translations for multiple languages for app-authored .  Please visit the Language Switcher blog for more information on what types of text are translated with the Language Switcher. Machine translation is not intended to replace human translators.

The translation assitant leverages Microsoft's Azure AI Translator Service, a cloud-based neural machine translation service.  Automatic translation in Instant Apps follows ArcGIS Online's data security and privacy guidelines.

How can I access the Translation Assistant in Instant Apps?

To access the translation assistant feature, open the configuration of an Instant App that has the language switcher. Navigate to the Language Switcher section. Add one or more languages to translate text into, then open the Translation configuration.

The translation configuration's top menu now includes a new Translation assistant option. Clicking on this will begin the process of generating translations.

Esri has not yet made a final decision on this direction. While in beta, the use of the Translation assistant is free.

Language switcher is currently available in the majority of  Instant Apps; it will be added to all in 2025.
