Hub Site custom header html/css - navbar not highlighting the selected tab

I need help with the navbar holding a selection. I am using the custom header (html/css), most of which was auto-populated with the hub site. When I click on the navbar items they are highlighted with a white bar underneath. However when you click off of the item the white bar disappears. How can I have the item stay highlighted with the white bar when selected?

Not being able to use JavaScript was an issue however this solution worked for me. Thank you @KlaraSchmitt
