Gallery thumbnail stretching image

I am trying to add custom thumbnails to documents I have entered into a gallery for my hub page. The images I am using are high resolution and sized to Esri's recommended dimensions (760x505). However, every time I upload them they keep getting stretched and it diminishes the quality of the image significantly. I've resized the image numerous times to no avail.

Certain Esri apps will take the thumbnail of an object and display it as a square. The basemap gallery in Experience Builder, for instance, makes them square, but by clipping off the margins. What happens if you upload square images as your thumbnails?

Hi Josh,

Thanks so much for the response. I just tried resizing my images to square as you suggested, but the automatic cropping feature in the image upload will not let me zoom out at all, no matter how big or small the image is, or if it is square or rectangular.
