The Domain Settings on Hub sites require a Site URL, which is prefixed to -<username>.hub.arcgis.com. On the other hand, the top-level subdomain, <username>.hub.arcgis.com, is already a live URL, with a mostly blank page except a search bar. Is it possible to somehow edit that page? It would be an easier URL to remember and share with end users.
