I have a mobile project coming up that will require a mobile solution. Field crew going out verifying the Lidar streams layer and updating attribute fields with complex on the fly calculations based on drop down menus. Disconnect editing. I have experience with arcpad but wanted to know what others thought of arcGIS for mobile.
Glad to hear your interests in AG for windows mobile. You are on the right track. Keep on with AGWM you will not be disappointed. I hear that ESRI will be slowly phasing out Arcpad. What exactly are you trying to do on the fly?
Without hearing about specific workflows, this can't be answered very well.
Here is my generalization. ArcPad is a more thoroughly thought out product that has been developed over quite a few years. Compare that to the relatively new ArcGIS Mobile for Windows. For complex data collection, ArcPad is not great but I have not seen anything better. ArcGIS Mobile for Windows adds what may be unneeded complexity of moving data back and forth with ArcGIS Server.
With the recent changes in ArcGIS Server licensing and attempted forced integration of ArcGIS Online, who knows what ArcGIS Mobile for Windows might force an organization into. Currently ArcPad does not suffer from these problems.
Can you share with me the complexity of your data collection? The reason I ask is I have collected a vast amount of GPS data along with creating attribute tables in ArcCatalog by subtypes and domains. I have helped people having problems with data collection and might be able to help you. I am excited for you and know that this program is capable of doing what you need to do.
Not today, but tomorrow would be a better day to do this. Can you tell me where you are having problems? Is it in the installation, the setup or just creating a mobile project from scratch?
